What pyschologists say about betting and gambling
A website dedicated to reporting news from the online gambling industry, casinogamblingweb.com tells the story of a man (Harry Kakavas) from Gold Coast city in Queensland State, who lost over $26m gambling in an Australian casino. Gambling was an addiction that cost him everything he had, and closer home, he might be in good company.
Nowadays, the morning talk at the office is about “who won, and who lost” in the previous night’s gambling at the casino.
Joining this game is as easy as pie, but getting out of it is always a big problem. Psychologists call this failure to quit the game psychological dependency.
According to Mr. Kajumba Mayanja, a psychologist and lecturer at Makerere University; Institute of Psychology, anticipation of victory is the biggest psychological trap of people who have been involved in gambling for some time.
“By nature, a human being does not want to be seen as unlucky. They continue trying their luck hoping that one day, they will be as lucky as someone who has won big from the bet,” he says.
He said that a lot excitement and tension is built up when one is betting for money and the chances of winning seem to equate those of losing. Others naturally do not find it easy to cope with losses and frustrations. They thus keep hoping to win even if they lose several times.
Also, those who used to bet as a means of showing off their riches will not quit easily because they fear being laughed at and ridiculed by their friends. They would rather borrow but keep their status quo.
When lucky, they think that that they have mastered the game. Even what they win will be taken back for another bet.
A point reaches when these people realise that they have “invested” a lot in the game and cannot accept the loss.
They will begin betting to recover what they have lost already.
Also, because they are psychologically convinced that they still stand a chance of winning, they will always blame themselves if they fail to recover the money and quit.
According to Mr. Mayanja, such people can only quit if they come to terms with reality.
From the beginning, the bettor should not focus his mind on a person who has won because few of the bettors do win big. If they anticipate a loss, they will be able to find ways of coping with it. They will accept the loss easily than those who anticipate winning and in the end lose.
They also have to accept the fact that gambling is a business meant to make profits not to enrich the bettors. If they are to get involved, they should do it for fun without anticipating victory.
They have to accept the loss when it comes. Trying to recover what was lost will increase the chances of addiction.
