Uganda: Unveiling Casino Simba

The humongous Casino Simba neon sign blinking in bright colours stood imposingly on Garden City mall and the outdoor projector screen got every passer by glued on what’s happening inside. But for those who had invites, it was a red carpet welcome, with overhead lightings and long legged ushers clad in black and gold.

The elegantly clad guests each tried their hand at gambling (though management chose to call it playing) and they were entertained by Russian girls’ kimansulo-like dance acts - the night’s best performance for the guys at least. It was all that and more that almost got me chanting; Welcome to Vegas baby!

Casino Simba opened its cream and gold metallic doors to the invited ‘public’ last Saturday night, with a launch party that, if truth be told, seemed more like an initiating ritual for the casino’s potential clientele who were served with free gaming chips, a (little) bag of coins for the slot machines, an open bar - all drinks available and a peep show - the Russian girls served guests with potions of strip tease. Guests were promised more (of the Russian girls) for the next three months at the casino.

It had been quite a while since Kampala’s who is who and especially on the social scene had been in the same room at the same time, and this was the night and event.

Organised by Sylvia Owori under her latest business venture, Owori Events, Simba Casino hosted guests from ministers like the Minister of State for Investment Semakula Kiwanuka, Kampala’s movers and shakers like the mayor Al hajji Nasser Ntenge Sebaggala, business tycoons - Sudhir Ruperelia, Sikander Lalani, Riyaz Kurji, musicians Bobi Wine, Blue*3, Obsessions (who graced the do with great performances), radio personalities like Crystal Newman, socialites, discotheque owners- Charlie Lubega, Elvis Sekyanzi, Ali Alybhai and the man who has enjoyed 13 years as the king of Kampala’s gambling world- Kampala Casino’s Bob Kabonero, among others.

With every one gambling their free chips and coins away, the management decided that it wouldn’t be a casino launch without a proper gamble and a big winner. So randomly, a raffle was held using business cards guests had left at the entrance.

The catch was; 10 days holiday in a five star hotel in Cyprus Turkey. The winning business card and the winner of the all expenses paid for luxurious holiday was Daily Monitor’s very own, photo journalist Eddie Chicco.

About $4 million (Shs6.7billion) is said to have been spent on this grandiose casino; the biggest in Uganda and the only one of the Pasha Gaming Casinos in Africa. It does reflect each penny of these billions even when management promises that more is still on the way.
