The man who won a million
Rizal Arifin came to Namibia on diplomatic service with the Indonesian High Commission in Windhoek. Last weekend he won the Black Diamond Black Jack competition. The prize is a cool Namibian $1 million.
Arifin says he gambles for fun. The Black Diamond Black Jack competition takes place every year. This year 350 competitors from 15 resorts in Southern Africa participated. Participants from other casinos paid an entrance fee of Namibian $5000 to participate but the Kalahari Sands Casino decided to liven the thing up by staging seven competitions in which their regular gamblers were invited to participate.
In the words of Peter Hayes, the casino manager, “Arifin walked in one day and won one of the competitions. He walked in the week and, again, won that competition.“
Thus Arifin was entitled to leave for Sun City, all expenses paid by Sun International, to compete with other finalists. Arifin said he never really expected to win, until the dealer turned the last card. At that time he had about Namibian $300 000 in chips. When he heard that the game was over and that he had won Namibian $1 million, he just sat there. He did not know what to do. Now that the reality has sunk in, he says he will give 20%, which is Namibian $200 000, of his winnings to orphan children in Indonesia. He grew up with the discipline that what he has must be shared with orphans and the destitute. What will he do with the Namibian $800 000? “Squander it.”
