Macau’s biggest corruption trial
Hong Kong - Macau’s biggest corruption trial began Monday as a former senior official appeared in court accused of corruptly amassing 100 million US dollars during his seven years in office. Ex-Secretary for Transport and Public Works in the southern Chinese gambling resort Ao Man-long faces 76 counts of taking bribes, money laundering and abuse of power.
Ao, 51, was arrested in December last year. He is alleged to have taken bribes in return for approving lucrative land deals for at least three developers and could face up to 25 years in prison.
Ao, a graduate of Taiwan University, joined the government in 1987 and was the first secretary for transport and public works after Macau was returned to Chinese sovereignty after the end of Portuguese colonial rule in 1999.
Macau, which has a population of 450,000, has enjoyed a huge economic and tourism boom in recent years as Las Vegas-owned chains have opened a string of new casinos around the territory.
