Japanese wins Tinian Baccarat challenge
TINIAN, Northern Marianas — A Japanese player received the $85,000 grand prize for the Baccarat Challenge held at the Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino over the weekend.
The baccarat champion, who declined to be identified, bested 142 other players who arrived here from Japan and South Korea for the tournament.
Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino marketing and promotions coordinator Kiri Jackson and tournament director Tony Jackson handed awards to the top four players after the finals on Sunday evening.
The players started with 30 hands for the qualifying and semi-final rounds, and 40 hands for the final round.
Forty players made it to the semi-final round while 10 vied for the championship in the final round.
The other winners took home $30,000, $16,000 and $6,000 for the second, third and fourth places.
Kiri Jackson said that it was the first Baccarat Challenge for this year.
“We finished the ‘Island Style’ Texas Hold’Em Poker Tournament last month in time with the Tinian Hot Pepper Festival, and this is our second tournament for 2008,” she said.
She added that players can expect more action as they are planning to hold a total of five poker tournaments, five Baccarat challenges and two Black Jack championship this year.
“Last year, Tinian Dynasty held two poker tournaments and two black jack competitions, now we will be increasing the number of tournaments and spacing them to adjust to the schedules of the players from other countries,” Kiri Jackson said.
She added that they will continue to offer attractive packages like free meals, accommodation, and airfare inclusive with the entry fee.
Tony Jackson said he is expecting to see more participants in the coming tournaments at the casino as all events promise an exciting weekend of thrills and enjoyment.
The Baccarat Challenge is one of the three annual events at Tinian Dynasty which has always drawn tourists and players from Japan, South Korea, China, Guam and other places.
The other two events are the Black Jack Championship and the Texas Hold’Em Poker Tournament. These events also add to the overall statistics of tourist arrivals in the CNMI every year.
